Our varieties of malting barley
Axereal Hungary Kft. is the market leader in the production of malting barley in Hungary. Our strategic partner is Isterra Kft., a member of the Axereal Group our regional seed production sister company, as well as the malting plant Boortmalt Kft., also a member of the Axereal Group. We produce varieties that cover the entire vertical range of malting barley accepted and demanded by the brewing industry.
Our company cultivates more than 30,000 hectares of malting barley throughout the country every year. Currently 80-90% of the malting barley harvested in Hungary is sown in autumn. The varieties that can be sown in autumn but are genetically spring varieties are sown between 15-25 October. When sowing spring varieties in the autumn, avoid areas with frost and sudden cooling. Among the varieties in our portfolio, Laureate and Leandra are the most rewarding varieties to sow in autumn due to their late emergence. The most important quality parameter for malting barley is a minimum germination rate of 96%. The general requirement of the malting industry is a protein content of around 10% in the malt. This requires that the protein content of the malting barley to be processed should be between 9.5 and 11.5%.
Our feed barley varieties
In Hungary, feed barley has the second largest acreage of the cereal crops. Feed barley typically has a six-row spike. Currently, our portfolio includes two feed barley varieties with different maturity time.
